Melanotan I (afamelanotide) is a synthetic analog of α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) with a linear structure, studied for its activation of melanocortin 1 receptors (MC1R) in melanocytes. Research has investigated its effects on melanin synthesis, skin photoprotection, and immune cell modulation via the melanocortin system. Distinguished from Melanotan II by its lack of cyclic structure and absence of MC3R/MC4R activity.
